Better Google Tasks 5.0.3

Better Google TasksI switched focus for a few days last week to breathe new life into an old project. Better Google Tasks is a Google Chrome extension that allows you full access to all your tasks right from the taskbar and even helps you keep track of what you have on your plate by displaying a task count and popping up a notification when you have overdue tasks for tasks due today.

As I mentioned above this isn’t a new extension. I actually wrote it when I first started using Chrome about 4 years ago but abandoned it in 2011 when I moved from Google Tasks to other task managers. Over the last few months I’ve found myself bouncing around nearly every task manager on the market (and wasting a lot of time and money in the process). Finally someone right from the top at Google reminded me of this project about a month ago and I realized that it might just be worth picking back up.

A lot has changed since 2011. The extension had been completely removed from the Chrome store at some point and wouldn’t work at all with newer versions of Chrome so a complete re-write was in order. It is now faster, smaller and, hopefully, better in just about every way. Unfortunately if you’re still using the old version though you’ll need to re-download it. The account I had been using on the Chrome store is no more and I had to start it fresh as a result.

If you’re looking for a simple way to keep track of your task lists give it a shot. If you’re like me it might just be simple enough to actually use. Of course, don’t just take my word for it. Here’s what Lifehacker had to say about it back before I stopped working on it.

Better WP Security 4 Ready For Testing and More Updates

Bit51As you might have noticed my writing here on Bit51 has been a little slow these last few weeks. This isn’t due to lack of interest, lack of ideas or any of the other issues that plague most bloggers. Instead it is due to a shift of focus, for the time being, from writing about my work to actually working on my projects, particularly Better WP Security 4. In fact, while posts have been a little slim the last few weeks I’ve managed to set a new personal record for GitHub commits with at least 1 commit a day for the last 18 days (my previous record was 4 days of steady commits). It’s been amazingly productive. Here’s what I have to show for it: [Continue Reading...]

Better WP Security 3.5.4

Better WP SecurityThe Better WP Security has been updated to version 3.5.4 which addresses everything from bug fixes, to added languages, to security improvements and more. There are 20 changes in total (the average update only gets about 5) so nearly everyone should benefit in one way or another.

On a side note, this will [hopefully] be the last major update to the 3.x versions. This version has been tested by more folks than normal and, pending any weird circumstances I do believe it should suffice until the next major update is ready. I’m hard at work on 4.0 and hope to have it out early this fall. If you would like to take part or just keep up with how it is progressing check out BetterWPSecurity.com.
